The space of modern design 芦Coordinate禄 has opened in the creative cluster of SUITD.

Another step in realization of strategic projects of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design within the program of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation 芦Priority 2030禄 was opening of the space of modern design 芦Coordinate禄 in the Northern capital. The project has no analogues in Russia. Its uniqueness lies in not only exhibiting the design objects, but also research and study them for historical transformations and changes. The exhibits will be digitally archived and the results of research, conducted by students of creative and technological educational programs, will be available as a resource for companies that focus on industrial design of their products, for light industry enterprises, interior studios, graphic and fashion designers, and jewelers.

The red ribbon of 芦Coordinate禄 was ceremoniously cut by vice-governor of Saint-Petersburg Vladimir Knyaginin and the chairman of Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region Universities Rectors鈥� Council, rector of Saint-Petersburg University of Industrial Technologies and Design Alexey Demidov.

Vladimir Knyaginin noted the important role of Saint-Petersburg universities in the formation of the city鈥檚 cultural space.

鈥� Saint-Petersburg has a unique history of formation and development of national design. With the participation of students our universities are doing a great job in preserving this history, its understanding and restoring the traditions of continuity. Today on the basis of the University of Industrial Technology and Design we open one more point of development and representation of material culture of the city, associated with projecting and production. We expect that in this space there will be collections and expositions that cover all of Saint-Petersburg design. Especially its industrial part. Saint-Petersburg designers can be justly proud of their achievements in national shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing, space industry, light industry and other fields. The Saint-Petersburg government will keep supporting such important initiatives for the city, 鈥� noted the vice-governor.

In the 芦Coordinate禄 exhibition there are works of leading designers, poster artists, graphic designers and painters starting from the 90-s: Yury Surkov, Erik Belousov, Yury Gulitova and Andrey Logvin, who influenced the poster art development in Russia. Another part of the exposition is the artworks created by the artificial intelligence Tonya paired with a human. The second author of works was a well-known digital artist, head of the Kazan branch of Sberbank鈥檚 芦School 21禄. Tonya has already exhibited at ArtistBazzaar, Bodyandmachine and the CIPR exposition TechWeek 2022. Another high-tech exhibit was given to 芦Coordinate禄 by the SberDevices team 鈥� now every day guests of the new space will be greeted and told about exhibits by a virtual avatar-guide Coordinate, created on the video generation platform with virtual characters VisperbySber. The character was first used by the developers as a tour guide in honor of the opening of the new SUITD platform.

The appearance of the first virtual guide was borrowed from a real actress. It took about 6 hours of filming to collect all the data for her playback: the actress read a text in the camera, then a paired dataset of her voice and corresponding video was collected. Using it, it was possible to train a neural network to generate the appropriate lip position according to the sound. Now every day guests of the new space will be greeted by a virtual avatar-guide Coordinate and told about the exhibits. Machine learning helps the avatar to synthesize and understand human speech, develop emotional intelligence based on the people鈥檚 behavioral and speech patterns.

鈥�I can safely say that Saint-Petersburg should be a workshop of national industrial design, for which the demand has now increased due to the return of the market to Russian brands. Without unnecessary modesty we can say that our decision 2 years ago to create a digital industrial design cluster 芦SmartDesign禄 on the basis of our two buildings, in many ways was ahead of time. The space of modern design 芦Coordinate禄 is another project within the cluster, which is supposed to form a professional design society around the university. And this process has started at the stage of designing and preparing the space. Many acclaimed Russian designers have consulted or participated in the creation of this space, and we want to thank them very much for that! Also this space is going to be a platform for communication with national companies, applying to the university for the development of various products of industrial and graphic design. Together we will be able to tell the history of national design and to create a new one!, 鈥� said the chairman of the Council of Rectors of Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region, Rector of SUITD Alexey Demidov.
