«After second year I reconsidered my views». Daria Pyatysheva about science and employment.

The foreign student from Kazakhstan Daria Pyatysheva enrolled in the Institute of Industrial Chemistry and Ecology Ƶ and moved to Saint-Petersburg to live here. Read in our interview about how to spend student days with benefits for your future career and which opportunities you totally should use.

Daria, why did your choice of the University for continuing education fall on Ƶ?

In my childhood I went to Saint-Petersburg and fell in love with it. Since then I have been dreaming about living here. And the first step to my dream was enrolling in Saint-Petersburg University of course. I was going to tie my life with chemistry and Ƶ was given a good opportunity to pass the entrance tests to the university through a visiting commission on the territory of Kazakhstan. And now I am getting a residence permit in Russia.

Did student life meet your expectations?

To be honest, as an entrant I didn’t have any expectations about student life because all I wanted was moving to Saint-Petersburg and getting a diploma, which will provide me with employment. But after my second year, when majors started, I reconsidered my views.

Then I started to do research in the cathedral laboratory. Later I had a summer internship, and I was invited to the staff. After getting experience at the enterprise, I realized that after the master's degree I want to get a job in my specialty. And I consider the magistracy itself as an opportunity to get a highly paid position in the future.

Daria, tell us what is the place of science in your life?

I am finishing my graduate work at the Faculty of Nanostructured, Fibrous and Composite Materials named after A. I. Meos, I am engaged in obtaining and researching the properties of carbon-fluoroplastic composite materials for import substitution in the field of hydrogen energy. I spend most of the time in the laboratory finishing my work. During the study I managed to publish several theses and even get the diploma of the second degree at the International Conference «Modern Pulp and Paper Industry. The current tasks and prospective decisions». I am getting ready to present the main results of the work at the All-Russian Scientific Conference and youth competition of science reports «Nanostructured, fibrous and composite materials», which will be in May.

Meanwhile I visit scientific events as a listener to learn what other scientists in related fields do, how they present results of their studies to advance my development in the future.

You already have experience at the enterprises. Is it difficult for a young specialist to find a job?

The faculty helped me to get employment on a summer internship at an enterprise that is engaged in the production of thermoplastics. After my internship I continued to work here. In general, our faculty is engaged in the promotion of students, conducts excursions and seminars together with manufacturing enterprises, where you can get not only extra skills, but also get an internship or a job there.

What did the University of Industrial Technologies and Design become for you personally?

For a little while I was an adapter for junior courses. I decided to do that because I remembered my fears as a first year student. It was the fear of being left without support and without help, because there are new people and strangers. And I wanted to help new students to join the university life. It also was a good opportunity to practice their social skills and skills of establishing contacts with different people.

It seems to me that during the years of study at the university, one should strive to get the most diverse experience by using all afforded opportunities. I already have an experience of scientific activity, working at the enterprise, that's what helped me understand what I want to do in my life.
