Ƶ students are working on an effective substance against cancer and HIV
10 March

The betulin team is a group of students of the Department of Organic Chemistry in Higher School of Technology and Energy Elena Vakhrusheva and Ekaterina Cherdakova. The name attached to them when after long and numerous attempts to find the ideal formula for dissolving betulin they finally made a breakthrough by obtaining a new modification of the substance. Betulin is a component contained in birch bark, it is known for being able to provide a huge immunomodulatory support to the body, is effective in the fight against cancer, hepatitis and HIV.

Elena Vakhrusheva, postgraduate of Higher School of Technology and Energy of Ƶ:

- An important task that scientists need to perform is to increase the biological activity of natural betulin. The difficulty arises due to its poor solubility in water and, consequently, low bioavailability. To this end, we are studying various methods of chemical modification of betulin. If compounds containing phosphorus are introduced into its molecule, it will become more fat- and water-soluble, which means there is a chance to find the ideal formula for creating a new component for drugs capable of treating cancer and HIV.

Ekaterina Cherdakova, master of Higher School of Technology and Energy of Ƶ:

- The compounds that we have received are new and previously unknown. These are not only phosphorus-substituted compounds, we have synthesized other betulin derivatives with new substituents. But they are not enough, we need something else that can deliver the substance to the cell.

To conduct research, students assembled a betulin production installation. The birch bark is crushed into fine crumbs, loaded into a container called "extractor" and several times spilled with special solvents in which betulin dissolves well (in pharmaceuticals, such solvents cannot be used because they are harmful to the body).

Experimentally, Elena and Ekaterina found the optimal size of the birch bark fraction, which allows to obtain the highest yield of the substance. By the way, birch bark itself is a waste at timber enterprises, so further research by students of the Higher School of Technology and Energy of Ƶ will prove the possibility of using this natural material as a raw material for obtaining valuable medicines.

There are several unresolved questions in research of Elena and Ekaterina: natural compounds are difficult to respond to standard chemical operations, and there are difficulties with storing the products obtained. In the future, scientists are waiting for the research on biological activity and replenishment of the team by microbiologists.
